The Bad News and The Good News

The bad news is that we all are sinners who have been condemned by God. There's nothing we can do to change that fact by our own efforts.

Romans 3:23   . . . all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Romans 6:23a . . . the wages of sin is death . . .

The good news is that God's Son, Jesus Christ, volunteered to take care of our sin problem and free us from God's condemnation. He paid the penalty for the sins of the world and received God the Father's unique punishment when he died on the cross in our place.

1 Peter 3:18 . . . for Christ also has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.
Romans 6:23b . . . but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Notice that eternal life is a gift !  How can we get this free gift?
By simply believing in Jesus Christ.

John 3:36 . . . He that believes on the Son has  [right that very moment] everlasting life: and he that does not believe on the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him.

The only thing required to receive everlasting life is to believe on the Son. This means to believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for you. He satisfied God's Justice for all your sins. When you put your faith alone in Christ alone to be saved, you are born again spiritually and you have eternal life.

Ephesians 2:8-9 . . . For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;  9) not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Salvation has nothing to do with how good a person you are or how many good works you have done. It is eternal life received only as a gift from God through believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. This is why the Apostle Paul could answer the Philippian jail guard who asked him, “What must I do to be saved?”

Acts 16:31 . . . Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.

The jailor’s household could be saved the same way he was, by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. This is true for you as well. You can believe right now and know for sure you have eternal life.

1 John 5:13 . . . These things  [The Bible] I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God in order that you may know  [with certainty] that you have eternal life.

Notice that you can have confidence that you have eternal life because you believed in His name or the person of the Son of God. Nothing else is required.  However, after you are saved, the Bible encourages believers to do good works, but they are not done in order to be saved.

Eternal life is eternal;  and so your eternal destiny is secure. It cannot be lost or taken away because when God gives or does something for us, it is permanent.

John 10:27-28 . . . My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;  28) and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand.
