The Bad News and The Good News

The bad news is that we all are sinners who are condemned by God and there is nothing we can do by our own effort to change that.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 6:23aFor the wages of sin is death . . .

The good news is that Jesus Christ went to the cross to take care of our sin problem.

1 Peter 3:18  For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God,

Romans 6:23b  . . . but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Notice that eternal life is a gift! How does one receive this free gift of eternal life? By believing in Jesus Christ.

John 3:36  He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him.

The only thing required to receive everlasting life is to believe on the Son. This means to believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross for your sins. When you put your faith alone in Christ alone to be saved, you are born again and you have eternal life.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;  9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Salvation has nothing to do with good works, it is received only as a gift from God by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ.

This is why the Apostle Paul could say this to the Philippian jailor who asked, “What must I do to be saved?”

Acts 16:31 Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.

The jailor’s household could be saved the same way he was, by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. This is true for you as well. You can believe right now and know for sure that you have eternal life.

1 John 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.

Notice, the only requirement to know for sure that you have eternal life is to believe in the name (the person) of the Son of God. No works of any kind are required. We are encouraged to do good works after we are saved but not in order to be saved.

Eternal life is – eternal. It cannot be lost or taken away. This means that your eternal destiny is secure.

John 10:27-28  My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;  28) and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand.
